The black stray dog was burned over two-thirds of her body and lost a portion of her left ear. Vicki Kavanaugh, director of Evansville Animal Control Shelter said the dog's injuries were severe. Kavanaugh said, "It's horrific what was done to her. It's a miracle that she lived. She has a lot of spirit in her."

The dog was named "Spirit" by the shelter staff. She is a great dog, still loves people and has a wonderful attitude.

Spirit still plays even though she is in serious condition and wearing a body wrap with a big collar to keep her from pulling off the bandages. They guess her age at about one year old and she weights 10 pounds.

Spirit will be put up for adoption soon as the doctor says she can.

Animal cruelty is a class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
