Three sled dogs killed, each shot three times with a rifle at point-blank range. Nome police have no motive or suspects. Mushers have started to sleep near their dog lots.
City Councilwoman LaVerne Smith said, "Only a coward does something like this and it takes a pretty sick person to act this way."
The dogs were located at two different lots, they were shot between 9 pm on Nov 3 and the following afternoon.
Susan Buchanan owns one of the lots. Buchanan's husband, Bill, found the 5-year old husky, Biscuit, dead when he was feeding the animals. The dog had been tied up and was standing inside its dog house or just outside when it was shot.
Buchanan said, "We live in Nome because we thought it was a safe place to live. And, now we are wondering just what kind of a person would do such a thing?"
Bill said her dog, Biscuit, "was a hard worker, loving and very friendly." References- Anchorage Daily News - Nov 11, 2000
