A Christchurch family is reeling after a cruel fatal attack on the family dog Mack. On Saturday evening the family went out and when they returned at 8 o'clock that night the dog, an American Staffordshire-Labrador Cross was missing, so the four children, aged 4 to 13 started to search the neighbourhood.

They found him still alive, hanging from his own chain which had been wrapped around and secured to the top rail of a fence between two properties in Kenilworth Place in Addington.

A nearby dog prevented the children from getting closer, so they ran home to alert their farther but by the time he arrived Mack was dead.

Sergeant Lachy Garrick admits there is a remote chance Mack did it to himself but he is appealing for witnesses to come forward as the family is distraught.
