More than 40 sick and starving cats were discovered abandoned in a Mesa home Thursday, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

When investigators went into the house in the 9200 block of East Carol Avenue, it was littered with feces, said Lt. Paul Chagolla, Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Two cats were found dead inside the house.

Investigators believe the owner abandoned the cats after being evicted about two weeks ago. She is being investigated, Chagolla said.

The cats were reportedly feeding on anything they could find, including two cats that were dead. The sheriff's office says the starving and neglected cats belonged to former tenant, 47-year-old Karen Johnson.

Animal neglect charges could be leveled against Johnson.

Conditions inside the home are described as "horrific" with the stench and stains.

The Sheriff's Office needs additional food, litter and supplies to care for the cats. Anyone wishing to donate supplies should contact the Animal Abuse Hotline at (602) 876-1681.
