After a tip from a Gretna resident on Dec. 22, the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office seized 29 animals and arrested the owners on counts of animal cruelty.
Zeeb said the Sheriff's Office was given another tip from a Gretna resident, which led to the arrest of Nicole Espanoza of 2084 Capehart Road in Gretna. Espanoza was cited on multiple counts of animal cruelty after the discovery of 29 neglected birds and dogs at the home last week.
"We got a call from the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office and we seized eight pheasants, seven chickens and 14 dogs. 11 were pit bulls," said Pam Wiese, public relations director for the Nebraska Humane Society.
Wiese said the animals were found in poor condition, many in the cold without food and water. Several of the dogs also showed injuries and scarring consistent with fighting, she said.
"It appeared many of the pit bulls had been involved in, or were being taught to fight," Zeeb said. "Many were manged and not being fed properly. Some will be destroyed because they were so bad."
Wiese said one of the chickens had to be euthanized, but the other 14 birds have been adopted. Three puppies were turned over to those who had the ownership stake in them, and the rest of the dogs are awaiting examinations to see if they are adoptable. Humane Society policy is that all "bully dogs" are not adoptable, so it is likely the remaining pit bulls will be euthanized, Wiese said.
Zeeb said he's grateful for the community support and hope it continues. Case UpdatesCR05-0000081 Nicole Espinoza was found guilty of having too many animals and received a $50.00 fine. | Update posted on Jun 17, 2006 - 8:56AM |
