Two people charged in Dickson County with animal cruelty said they were trying to protect the animals from last week's bad weather. The suspects, Brian Turner and Andrea Miller, said they were stranded by last week's winter storm in Dickson County.

The two people were transporting 30 dogs and two horses.

Police found the animals, caged inside a truck and a Dickson motel room.

Turner said they were in the process of relocating from Arizona to the Midwest, but the were stranded by the storm.

"I didn't want the horses in the trailer longer than I had to because of the icy conditionseven in the parking lot...I couldn't take the animals out," Turner said.

Dickson County humane officials said the animals were caged for days with very little food and without any form of exercise.

"Overall, the animals seem to be in pretty good shape... but that's not the issue. The issue is the transport and confinement," said Lacey Nelson, with the Dickson County Humane Society.

Turner said he runs a non-profit organization that trains animals to help with police and fire rescue. Humane Association officials said Turner and Miller haven't produced paperwork to prove that claim.

Turner and Miller said they plan to buy a farm near Dickson to raise the animals since they like the area, assuming the animals are returned to them.
