An Indianapolis man was arrested Wednesday in a dog-fighting case under investigation since October. Clifton Withers, 29, 600 block of Arbor Street, faces charges of promoting an animal-fighting contest, possession of animal-fighting paraphernalia and neglect of a vertebrate animal. He surrendered and was released on his own recognizance.

Marion County animal control officers had been investigating property thought to have been used by Withers in the 3400 block of Faculty Drive on the Westside. According to a printed report, when officers used a search warrant to check that property Oct. 6, they found eight pit bulls, devices used to train dogs for fighting, dog-fighting videos and magazines and medication to treat wounded animals.

Also on the property was equipment thought to have been used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. That property is in a residential neighborhood a few blocks from Indianapolis Public School 98 on Kiel Avenue.

The search led to the filing of dog-fighting charges against Withers on Nov. 22, when a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Case Updates

An Indianapolis man was sentenced today to 15 years in prison in connection with dog fighting and drug crimes.

Superior Court Judge William Young also sentenced Clifton Withers, 30, to two years probation and ordered him to complete substance abuse treatment.

Withers was kind to neither man nor beast, Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said in a statement issued today. He sold cocaine to feed the addictions of others and to obtain money to finance his own drug addiction and harboured dogs in order to engage in the cruel practice of having them fight.

Prosecutors say Withers, 600 block of Arbor Street, was caught with cocaine and cash in March 2004 and January 2005.

In October 2004, prosecutors say investigators found eight pit bulls, dog-fighting equipment, dog-fighting videos and magazines, and medicine used to treat wounded animals in a property Withers operated in the 3400 block of Faculty Drive.

The dogs had no food or water and some bore scars, prosecutors say
