Police are searching for a Hephzibah man suspected of helping his neighbor beat a stray dog with a baseball bat. The dying dog's throat was cut to end its suffering.

When he is found, Mark Adams, 33, of the 4000 block Dunbarton Drive will be charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly helping to beat a dog that was in Erik Joseph Mozee's backyard.

Erik Mozee was charged with cruelty to animals after he turned himself in. Mr Mozee took his mixed Labrador retriever to the Columbia County Animal Control facility and turned her in. If the animal is not adopted, she will be put to death.

Mr Mozee called the Richmond County facility last week concerning a vicious dog in his backyard, according to a sheriff's department report.

Mozee told officials the dog had begun running around in his yard, and he beat him with a baseball bat. A Hephzibah policeman advised him to cut the dog's throat to put him out of his misery, according to a sheriff's department report.

Mr Mozee said his neighbor (Mark Adams) came over and cut the dog's throat, according to the report.
