Dog neglected by owner
Haledon, NJ (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jan 31, 2000
County: Passaic

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Kenneth Grant

Kenneth Grant was sentenced to 10 days in jail on animal abuse charges after the dog was found in his apartment emaciated and living in filth.

He was also ordered to pay almost $1,000 in fines and $1,500 to cover the cost of veterinary bills.

Animal control officers said they first arrested Grant in February after a tip. After entering the apartment they found a German shepherd mix forced to live in its own feces with little food and water.

The dog weighed 34 pounds - about half its ideal weight of 65 pounds, said Deborah Hoskins, an agent with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

After Grant was sentenced on Aug 8, the dog was confiscated by authorities and has been adopted by another family.
