A reward is offered for information about two people who threw a dog off the Rice Avenue overpass onto the Ventura Freeway. The reward is for information leading to an arrest.

Two people dropped the dog 20 feet from the overpass onto the southbound lanes about 4:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The dog, a male German shepherd mix, was treated for two broken legs, cuts and scrapes at the Camarillo animal shelter.

Tom Wilkes, owner of Ventura communications company is offering the reward. One of his employees had to swerve to miss the animal.

"Somebody else out there had to see this," he said. "We have to make sure these people get stopped."

The dog is expected to recover and will be placed for adoption if the owner cannot be located.

The dog will be taken to the Animal Rescue Volunteers, a Simi Valley facility for abandoned pets.

Case Updates

The California Highway Patrol investigation determined the dog was the victim of a freak accident. The dog, which was named William by rescuers, jumped or fell over the bridge railing after getting hit by a car and the two teens fled in fright, the CHP said.

"These kids were innocent .. " CHP Office Rus Regan said. "They did not commit a crime. These are decent kids in our book."

The woman who hit the dog confirmed to officers that he jumped or fell off the bridge without anyone's assistance, Regan said.

The boys, worried the owner would get mad because he always told theme to take Bon-Bon on a leash, fled on their bikes and kept quiet. Ayala, the owner thought the dog ran away. It was unclear why it took the family so long to come forward.
