A Cohansey River fisherman found a pit bull that had been drowned. An 8- pound rock was fastened to a rope around the dog's neck.

Lawrence Spencer, 27, of Bridgeton owner of the pit bull was charged with animal cruelty and released on a summons. He told police the dog was sick, so he tied a weight around the dog's neck and threw it into the river.

For $35, he could have called the SPCA. Now he's looking at the kind of sentences handed out to two other Bridgeton men for killing their pit bulls (which was: 90 days in jail, fined $500, ordered to undergo counseling, perform 30 days community service at the Cumberland County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Shelter, and witness the euthanizing of two animals at the shelter).

The date for Spencer's sentencing was not given.
