The trial of three Coden men accused of beating a puppy almost to death last September began this week in Mobile County District Court but was postponed until April 18 because all of the witnesses were not available.
Viegsamone Bounyasaeng, 20, Phanosome Bounyasaeng, 26, and Keo Sodanh, 20, are each charged with cruelty to animals.
Cruelty to animals is a misdemeanor. If convicted, the men face a maximum of six months in jail, a $1,000 fine or both, according to Assistant District Attorney Caroline Siderius.
Elisabeth Flott, cruelty investigator with the Mobile Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the attack was witnessed by John Ladnier.
She said Ladnier told her and animal control officers that the attack took place in Coden. Flott said in a written statement that Ladnier was repairing the roof of his house when he heard the mix-breed puppy "scream."
He saw three young men kick and beat the small dog and drag it around by its neck, Flott said. The puppy, which apeared to be about five months old, was taken to a veterinarian for treatment and later adopted by a Mobile couple.
The case is being tried before District Judge Vicki Davis. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
