A woman who pleaded guilty to throwing a puppy from her second story apartment was sentenced to three years' probation and 30 days of community service, according to the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority.
Dawane Ray, 33, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty in Los Cerritos Municipal Court after the April 16 incident. Witnesses at a nearby car dealership told sheriff's deputies that the woman was yelling out her window to a man on Artesia Boulevard when she held up the animal and threw it to the ground.
Witnesses said the dog was crying and appeared unable to move and that Ray ran down to retrieve it.
Investigators never saw the dog. Ray told them that she had given it away to a Long Beach family shortly afterward. "We're not sure exactly why she threw the dog, but it appears to have been (part of) a domestic dispute," said Sgt Aaron Reyes, of the animal control authority.
