A man suspected of slashing a dog's face with a razor shut himself into his house and, for more than an hour held out against police attempts to arrest him.

The dog's owner called San Diego police when she discovered the injured pet in her yard. The man she suspected had gone into his Ledgewood Lane home.

Officers surrounded the house and tried to reach him by telephone, but he only screamed at them, police said. He appeared at the door a few times and finally came out at 5:50 p.m. as SWAT officers began arriving.

James Fry, 38, was jailed on suspicion of animal cruelty and making threats, police said.
