Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Sheena, a 9-year old German shepherd was found shot dead in a ditch in front of her Depot Road home late last week. Alan Paige, owner, was on his way to work Aug 27 when he made the startling discovery.

"We thought, 'That's so strange because she never went in the road.'" Brenda Paige said. "When we turned her over to put her on the back of the truck, we saw the bullet hole in her head. It was dead center in her forehead in between her eyes. That's how good of a shot they had. They had to have been close."

Sheena is believed to have been shot sometime between 11:30 p.m. Aug 26 and 5 a.m. Aug 27, the spokesman said. The shooting is not believed to be related to the vandalism of about 20 mailboxes in the McKenney and DeWitt areas that occurred last weekend, the spokesman said.

Sheena was the offspring of Petersburg police dogs and was protective of the Paiges and their two children. Mrs Paige said, When friends came to visit, most knew to stay in their car until Alan or Brenda Paige could secure the dog. One friend was bitten on the hand - it didn't break the skin - when he got out of his car before the Paiges could secure Sheena, Mrs Paige said.

The Paiges' 5-acre lot is fairly secluded. Alan Paige's parents live next door. A fence separates the Paiges' property from a neighbor on the other side, but it doesn't enclose any part of the lot, Mrs Pagie said.

Sheena slept outside and was allowed free run of the yard, but she didn't roam, she said. Mrs Paige said Sheena was trained to get no closer to Depot Road than about 30 yards, where a pine tree grows by the driveway.

"We have people that walk the road, walkers, and she never bothers them. I mean, she may bark at them, but she never goes down to the road," she said.
