A Glen Burnie man whose pit bull suffered a severe neck injury from being left tied up for weeks with a metal wire was sentenced yesterday to 90 days in jail for animal cruelty.

The sentence doled out to Damion Henson, 24, of 6461 Bricktown Circle, will begin once he finishes serving an unrelated four-month sentence in Baltimore County, prosecutors said. He will also be on probation for a year.

Mr. Henson's girlfriend called police after discovering the female dog named Calico on May 16 at Mr. Henson's grandmother's home. The plastic-covered wire used to restrain the animal outside had cut a 2-inch-wide gash in her neck that was a half-inch thick. The wound appeared infected and the dog's throat was swollen, county police said in a report.

New skin had grown over the wire in places, said Kristin Riggin, a spokesman for the State's Attorney's Office.

The dog was taken to a veterinarian who removed the wire. The dog has since been placed with a rescue shelter, she said.

Animal Control officers previously confiscated the dog and another pit bull from Mr. Henson last November for neglect but returned them to him, she said.
