Five people were arrested and seven injured dogs were seized after police responded Friday to a report of animal cruelty at an abandoned house in Kenner. Police also seized canine muscle stimulators, steroids, anti-infection drugs and syringes at the home.

Arrested are Roosevelt Herbert, 26, of Metairie; and Carl Sanders, 34, Kent Scott, 39, Michael Soniat Jr., 24, and Quincy Cage, 26, all of Kenner. Each faces dog fighting, animal cruelty and criminal trespass charges.

According to investigators, officers found malnourished and injured dogs chained up at a house at 3121 Albany St. in Kenner. Officers could hear barking and shouting coming from inside the house. When officers looked through a window, they saw the five suspects watching as two dogs fought.

After the men were arrested, a search of the house revealed a "fight room" where blood covered the walls and floor and a "wash down room" where an injured dog was standing in a bathtub. In another room, a dog with fresh wounds to its face was found lying on a bed.

Theodora Stewart lives next door to the abandoned house. She said since she has been home recovering from surgery, she heard the dogs barking but had no clue what was going on until she saw police and animal control carrying the animals out of the house.

"I saw a lot of dogs, and they were all mangled and skinny," Stewart said. Neighbors said the block now sounds like it's back to normal.

"It has been quiet and peaceful for the last several days," Stewart said.

An investigation is ongoing.
