James C. Helsel, 20, who gave his address as a South Ridgewood Avenue motel, was arrested June 29 and charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals.

The State Attorney's Office issued two arrest warrants for local Daytona Beach man after investigators said he tortured a cat and a dog to death in separate incidents.

In both cases, investigators said Helsel killed the animals at a home on Green Acres Circle South in South Daytona. The dog's death reportedly occurred in January.

The cat's death ocurred between March 24 and April 4.

Although he has been charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty, Linda Brinker, spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office, said more charges against Helsel may be forthcoming. He was taken to the Branch Jail where he was held on $10,000 bail. He posted bail Wednesday afternoon.
