14 puppies shot and killed
Cambridge, MN (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jan 31, 1999
County: Isanti

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Fourteen dogs were found dead in Isanti County last weekend. Most were found shot in the head along a roadside near Cambridge.

Mike Lewis, chief deputy in the Isanti County sheriff's office, said Wednesday that the dogs may have been killed by their owner. The dogs appear to be 4- to 5-month old puppies from the same litter.

Authorities investigating the dog killings think it isn't the work of vandals or dog nappers, but probably someone disposing of an unwanted litter.

"This does not appear to be an incident where people are stealing dogs and killiing them," he said. "It is serious, but there's a big difference I think in what happened here as to what happened two years ago."

Lewis also said the latest incident also didn't appear to be related to a case a few weeks ago in which two dead dogs were found hanging in a tree.

The remains of the 14 dogs all similar in size, breed, age, were found scattered in ditches in two remote spots of Isanti County. They were all shot in the head with small caliber weapon. "It appeared as if someone just threw them out of the vehicle," Lewis said. "They were all sort of scattered down the ditch."

Cruelty to animals is a misdemeanor crime in Minnesota. The maximum penalty for conviction is 90 days in jail and a $700 fine.
