Eric Crockett, 26, was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. He was released on $1,000 bond and is due in court Feb 23.

The mixed-breed female pup was discovered by a man sifting through a Dumpster at a Groton shopping center on Jan 25.

Police said Crockett initially reported the dog missing. Subsequent interview led to his admission, police said. Police would not disclose why Cockett tied up the dog and abandoned her.

Michael Terry said he cried when he discovered the white and tan puppy. Its front and back legs were bound together and its jaws were taped shut.

Terry called 911 and police brought the dog to a Waterford veterinarian who estimated its age at about 10 months. He said the pup could have been in the Dumpster for as long as 18 hours, based on its condition when found. The puppy has recovered and more than 100 people have offered to provide a home for her.
