more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Dog starved to death
Anchorage, AK (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Oct 31, 1997
County: Anchorage

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Charles Allen Sanders

Charles Allen Sanders, 39, pleaded no contest to a charge of animal cruelty.

Allen was convicted of letting his dog starve to death in his garage. Sanders is periodically away in his job with the Federal Aviation Administration. He said he assumed the boy he paid to feed the dog was looking after his dog. Last time Sanders saw the dog alive was Nov 3 and he found the carcass on Jan 14, 1998.

Judge Gregory Motyka sentenced Sanders to six months in jail and fined him $1,000, then suspended all of the jail time and $500 of the fine. The judge placed him on three years of probation and ordered Sanders to perform 80 hours of community service. He forbade Sanders from owning animals for two years.

The maximum punishment for animal cruelty in Anchorage is a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Sanders said he thought the sentence was lenient and that he had convinced the judge he did not mean to harm the animal.
