Charles Allen Sanders, 39, pleaded no contest to a charge of animal cruelty.
Allen was convicted of letting his dog starve to death in his garage. Sanders is periodically away in his job with the Federal Aviation Administration. He said he assumed the boy he paid to feed the dog was looking after his dog. Last time Sanders saw the dog alive was Nov 3 and he found the carcass on Jan 14, 1998.
Judge Gregory Motyka sentenced Sanders to six months in jail and fined him $1,000, then suspended all of the jail time and $500 of the fine. The judge placed him on three years of probation and ordered Sanders to perform 80 hours of community service. He forbade Sanders from owning animals for two years.
The maximum punishment for animal cruelty in Anchorage is a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Sanders said he thought the sentence was lenient and that he had convinced the judge he did not mean to harm the animal. References « More cases in Anchorage County, AK
