Robert D. Newman shot a Labrador in the head on Feb 25. The dog was running across his property. He was charged with cruelty to animals and endangering the two women walking with the dog.

The dog underwent surgery and survived.

Newman said he shot the dog because it and another dog were chasing deer on his property and because he feared for the safefy of his dog, a Yorkshire terrier.

The cases will be heard in Justice Court.
