Edward Augustyn, 40, left his young German Shepherd tied up without food or water, leaving the starving animal to chew on a wooden post in an attempt to stay alive.
The town judge sentenced the Fayetteville man to six months in jail for animal cruelty - a sentence, the judge said, that was espoused in 160 letters sent to him by local 4th graders.
Augustyn was arrested in January when Onodaga County Sheriff's deputies went to his home to serve an eviction notice and found the 18-month old dog dead, still tied to a wooden post on the porch. An examination revealed wood chips in the dog's stomach.
Augustyn pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors - a failure to provide proper sustenance and permitting the unjustifiable death of an animal. He could have been sentenced up to one year on each count.
Before he was sentenced Augustyn apologized and asked for community service at an animal shelter so he could continue to work and support his children, ages 9 and 7. The children do not live with him. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
