Charles Pettigrew, 28 of Dart Street is charged by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office with ill teatment of an animal. Bail was set at $50,000 on the newest charge against Pettigrew, who was arrested last week along with two others on burglary charges.

Sheriff's deputies allege the dog was in a small plastic "kennel" that was dropped into a bathtub during a June 20 break-in at the Taylor's home. The bathtub was filling with hot water, which drowned the dog, a 2-year old white poodle named Katie.

After hearing from a detective that Pettigrew has allegedly described the killing of the dog to friend, including co-defendant in the burglaries, Magistrate Jack Guedalia ordered what some officials say maybe the highest bail ever set in an animal cruelty case in Charleston County.

Carol Linville of Pet Helpers said the animal cruelty charge against Pettigrew carries a maximum pentalty of two years imprisonment and a $5,000 fine.

Pettigrew has since been charged by North Charleston Police in another burglary where all the  fish in the aquarium were killed. Bond was set at $10,000 on the animal cruelty charge, and $40,000 on the burglary charge in the Charleston County case; bond was set for $20,000 in the North Charleston case.
