Cockfighting - over 200 birds seized Bay Shore, NY (US)Incident Date: Wednesday, Nov 10, 2004 County: Suffolk
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Neto Gonzalez
Neto Gonzalez, a 41-year-old Bay Shore man, was arrested Nov 10, 2004 and is facing time behind bars for allegedly running a cock fighting ring. The Suffolk County SPCA found more than 200 roosters and cock fighting tools in his Wisconsin Avenue home. The officers say the birds were pumped full of drugs and trained to fight.
SPCA officials say the roosters will have to be put to sleep; the animals are too violent to rehabilitate and too shot up with steroids to use for food. Nonetheless, the officers say they believe the roosters are better off dead than alive and suffering.
Police say the operation could have been worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Authorities say they have a list of those who participated in the cockfights, and they expect more arrests to be made soon. References« NY State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Suffolk County, NY
