An Ironwood woman entered a not guilty plea this week to a charge she intentionally failed to properly care for her pets.

Marquita F. Allen, 18, is scheduled for a pre-trial conference Dec. 21 in Iron County Court.

Allen was charged by Hurley police in September after her dogs chased several people in the vicinity of 1001 Division St. in Hurley, where she formerly lived.

Officers found the dogs had broken out of a basement window in the house. While investigating the situation, police said they found dog feces all over the house, although there was food and water available for the animals.

The Gogebic County Sheriff's Department assisted Hurley police in rounding up the dogs, which were brought to the HOPE animal shelter.

Court records show Allen was cited five times for allowing her dogs to run loose. She was assessed a $156 forfeiture after pleading no contest Monday to the fifth offense of allowing dogs to run at-large.

Under conditions of the $500 bond on the Class A misdemeanor charging she failed to provide proper sanitation standards, she is not allowed to own any animals.

Allen is being represented by Bessemer attorney Michael Korpela.
