Dog attacked with axe Newark, DE (US)Incident Date: Monday, Nov 15, 2004 County: New Castle
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Benjamin Quarles
Delaware authorities have arrested a man for an alleged vicious attack on his neighbor's dog with an ax. Reports state that a woman was walking her leashed dog, Nikita, when it was attacked by another dog - then the other dog's owner allegedly attacked the woman's dog with an axe.
Veterinarian Dr. Robert Flanagan described the wounded dog he treated: "It had about a four inch laceration on its back right at the neck, you could tell an ax went right into it. I've never in my mind thought someone would take an ax and hit a dog with it."
Officials confirm that 21-year-old Benjamin Quarles was arrested at Chestnut Crossing Apartments in Newark on Monday. Despite the allegations, Quarles insists that his dog was instead attacked by the other.
However, nearby residents as well as Dr. Flanagan refute his claim: "Nikita is about 12-years-old, gray in the face, as nice as can be, you would never think that this dog would hurt you."
Officials are skeptical of Quarles story.
"He sort of chased the dog around, once the dog was stuck it was heavy bleeding from what witnesses tell us," said Corporal Wayne Pennington of the New Castle County Police.
Dr. Flanagan added that Nikita "lost 25 percent of his blood volume, it was coated in blood."
According to reports, although Nikita needed about 30 stitches, he is expected to make a full recovery.
Quarles has since been released on $500 bail. Quarles is also charged with menacing his neighbor. References« DE State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in New Castle County, DE
