15 Siberian Husky puppies were found abandoned on Stange Road north of State Rt. 2 in Benton Township. A birdwatcher reported the puppies to county sheriff's deputies, who sought the help of the humane society in rescuing them.

When Bill Anderson of the Humane Society of Ottawa County arrived, other people on the road near the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge were holding the pups to keep them warm, and some were still in the road.

"When they found them, there was only an hour until sunset. They would have ended up being either road kill or coyote dinner."

Instead, the 6-week old puppies have become objects of affection for people throughout the region.

Many of the huskies, which are being held at the Humane Society's shelter in Port Clinton, are being adopted. Mr. Anderson said the shelter has been inundated with calls from prospective pet owners as word has spread about the seven female and eight male puppies. Potential owners have placed holds on all the puppies.

"People right now have their hearts on their sleeves," Mr. Anderson said. "Some people have good intentions, but they are emotional in the beginning and may back out."

As the shelter seeks people to take care of the puppies, they hope to find out who dumped them. Ohio classifies pet cruelty as a misdemeanor crime.

"I've seen a lot of things, but this is 15 healthy pups that are just left to die," he said. "It's an intentional move by somebody. They choose to do this."

The owner should have had the mother spayed and could have contacted the humane society to find homes for the pups, he said.

The mother dog wasn't found with the pups, meaning there is a high likelihood she is still with the person who is responsible. Because she was carrying 15 puppies, the dog shouldn't have been difficult to spot.

"That's a very pregnant dog," Mr. Anderson said.
