Rick Miller received probation for attempted mercy killing of puppy. Miller said his dog was hit by a car, so he hung it and cut its throat "to ease the dog out of pain." No evidence from police that dog was ever hit by a car.

Miller pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, a misdeameanor that carries a potential penalty of 93 days in jail. The alleged incidents occured last fall at his former home on Liberty Drive in Holland Township.

Miller denied that he starved and tried to poison the dog.

He was put on probation for two years and ordered to pay $140 in fines and costs for the incidents which the injured dog survived.
