A Berkleley man charged with animal cruelty after Ocean Township police searched an Augusta Ave home and found a shallow grave containing a pet pig that had been stabbed to death.

Victor Ionella, 34, of the Bayville section of Berkeley was charged with cruelty to animals.

Police assisted in the raid by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Stafford Township police, said the pig, a household pet, had been tortured before it was stabbed to death June 30.

It was hit with a sledge hammer and shovel. The pig was 12 years old.
