A dachshund named Cocoa was found dead in his owners' backyard, shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday.  Cocoa's owners stated that his body was still warm when their 19-year-old son found the dog next to the swingset.

"You could tell he was dead. His neck was broken and it looked like his front leg was twisted," said Tim Allen, a captain with the Peoria Fire Department.  Tim and his wife Patty had gotten Cocoa as a gift for their 11-year-old daughter about four months ago.

Patty said the 11-year-old lay on the ground next to Cocoa, trying to soothe the dead dog. She even asked for water, something she thought would help bring her pet back to life.

Beyond the Allens' fenced backyard, in the alley that runs behind their house, it was discovered that someone had spray-painted the letters "U.T.G." on the rear of their car. Additonally, neighbors' vehicles and garage doors near the alley on each side of the Allens' home and further on down the block had been vandalized with the same markings.

Patty had let Cocoa out the back door for only a few minutes to go to the bathroom, and that's when the firefighter thinks a gang of juveniles made their way through the alley, damaging property and killing his dog.

A neighbor had reportedly seen three male juveniles in the alley about the same time.

Peoria police said there is no gang called "U.T.G." but noted that many times, a group of juveniles will make up a name when committing crimes.
