Even if investigators find out who shot and killed three grown bison where they grazed at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve north of Pawhuska, Harvey Payne never expects to get a good explanation for the slaughter.

Staff at the preserve discovered the bodies July 30. One bull and two cows lay dead from gunshot wounds in the southwestern area of the preserve, near the gravel road that runs through the 37,000-acre prairie.

This is the first time bison on the preserve have been illegally shot.
