For six Jersey calves in Phoenix crammed into the trunk of a car five days ago, it's a new lease on life. This morning, the calves will go into ''foster care'' at a Paradise Valley animal sanctuary.

A few days ago, the fate of the week-old baby bulls looked bleak.

But on Wednesday, the Arizona Department of Agriculture transferred ownership of the calves to the Humane Society.

The outrage stemmed from the way the calves were fround - hogtied, stuffed into the trunk of a dilapidated Chevrolet Impala and covered in feces.

They were discovered Saturday after Phoenix police pulled over Juan Mora, 29, for driving without license plates. After hearing noises in the trunk, officers discovered the calves, severely dehydrated and barely alive.

An investigation by the Arizona Department of Agriculture led to two citations, not having a bill of sale or a hauling card for the animals, against Mora.

Mora also faces six felony counts of cruelty to animals for shuttling the calves in a vehicle not designed to transport livestock.

In addition, the department was able to determine that the original owner, Mountain Shadows Dairy, did nothing wrong in selling the animals. After neither Mountain Shadows Dairy nor Mora wanted the calves, ownership was transferred legally to the Arizona Humane Society.

Eventually, the calves that recover from their ordeal will be moved to a livestock sanctuary "to live out their days peacefully."
