Two dogs locked in a New Zealand car for a week have been rescued by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The dogs' owner, who was staying at an Auckland backpackers hostel, said the dogs had not been mistreated but she was pleased the SPCA had intervened, the New Zealand Herald reported Tuesday.

"I tried my hardest to please everyone," she said. "This will make things easier because I've got nowhere to keep them."

Nathan Beale, who works in the area, disagreed with the owner's assessment and said the dogs had been in the car since last Tuesday, and were left barking all day with no water and a couple of biscuits.

"Everybody grabbed water bottles and we put water through the gap in the window so they could at least drink," he said.

Crosland is expected to retrieve her dogs Wednesday from the SPCA when she returns to Wellington.

SPCA inspector John Heremaia said it was not an ideal situation.
