An 8-year-old poodle named Buster was reportedly been shot twice in the chest on the evening of Nov 3, after he went missing from the 18-year-old owner's yard in an unincorporated area of east Mesa. The small, white dog found his way home and died on the front porch.

"He never caused any trouble," Carter said. "He absolutely loved people, wouldnt hurt anything."

The owner's grandparents searched for hours after they discovered the dog was missing from their fenced yard about 2 a.m. Thursday.

When they found Buster at 5 a.m., he had two gunshot wounds, possibly from a .22 caliber handgun or a pellet gun. Buster had lived with Carters grandparents in the 2900 block of North 78th Street since he was a puppy.

The brutal death has shocked the family, who have been unable to report the incident to officials after getting the runaround from three different agencies Thursday.

Mesa police told them to contact Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, who in turn told them to contact the Maricopa County Sheriff s Office animal cruelty unit. In a recorded message, the sheriffs office told callers to contact their local police departments because of a high volume of calls.
