Police are searching for the man who put a gun to the head of a dog, and then pulled the trigger. Seven-month-old Samson is moving slowly after the Shepherd-mix came out of surgery.

Specialists had to remove a bullet lodged above his right arm. The .38 caliber bullet tore through his right side, past his heart, lungs and muscle.

"He's a really lucky dog. The bullet didn't do damage it could've done. He's in good shape," says Dori Villalon of the Animal Protective League. Samson was attacked defending his owner, 54-year-old Robert Adair, who was also attacked.

The dog's owner was found mugged in this alley, pistol whipped with a huge wound to the back of his head. His dog sprung to action and went after the attacker, who shot the animal.

Both dog and owner went stumbling into a grocery store, bloodied and semi-conscious. That is where Tony Elkhatir called 911.

Adair is still hospitalized, and Samson is expected to make a full recovery.

The Animal Protective League paid for Samson's surgery and will reunite dog and owner.

Police are searching for the shooter.
