Dog stabbed, gutted
Sweet Home, OR (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Dec 16, 2001
County: Linn

Disposition: Convicted

Defendants/Suspects:
» Tommy Wilson Harrel
» Levi Graven

A 19-year-old Sweet Home man charged with beating and stabbing a homeless man last Monday evening at an apartment at 1238 Nandina, has a two page history of run-ins with the law enforcement officers in Sweet Home.

He also was found guilty in early 2002 of aggravated animal abuse in the mutilation of an eight-year-old girl's pet dog.

December 16, 2001, Harrel was charged with aggravated animal abuse while an accomplice, Levi Graven, was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated animal abuse.

Harrel reportedly admitted throwing a knife that injured a seven-month-old yellow lab. A police report later indicated that the dog had been gutted and that it had lived for some time after the event.

At the time, Harrel was living with Graven near the home of the family that owned the dog.

During questioning, Harrel reportedly told an SHPD officer that he was mad after a fight with his mother and that Graven had "egged" him on about throwing a pocket knife at the dog as the two walked back to their home after skateboarding at the high school.

Harrel and Graven also reportedly videotaped the event, using a camera that had been reported stolen from a Sweet Home resident.

Tommy Wilson Harrel, remained lodged Friday afternoon at the Linn County Jail after he reportedly hit 37-year-old Eric Zervas, a homeless man who earlier in the day had been charged with theft in the third degree after allegedly taking a backpack full of beer from the Sweet Home Safeway store.

Police Chief Bob Burford said Harrel had reportedly invited Zervas to the apartment but became agitated after he Zervas wouldn't allow him to take empty cans he had collected that day to a store to be redeemed to purchase beer.

Harrel allegedly told three young women to go into a bedroom. One of the women took a young infant with her.

Harrel then allegedly used a large stick, reported to be at least five feet long and three inches in diameter to beat upon Zervas. He also allegedly attacked Zervas with a knife, imparting wounds on Zervas' hands.

"Harrel reportedly told Zervas at some point to get on his hands and knees and put a knife to Zervas' throat," Chief Burford said. "Harrel told Zervas to look at the floor or he would cut his throat."

As of Friday, Zervas had been released from Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital and was staying with a relative near Sweet Home.

Harrel has an extensive contact list with Sweet Home police, dating back 10 years to when he was just nine years old.

The list ranges from being contacted about theft, to motor vehicle accident to menacing, curfew violations, MIP liquor, parole violation, and burglary from being questioned to being charged.

October 25 and 26 he faced the following charges: kidnapping in the first degree, robbery in the first degree, assault in the first degree, criminal mischief in the second degree, burglary in the second degree, criminal mischief in the second degree, burglary in the second degree and criminal mischief in the second degree.
