A Drakesboro woman was arraigned in Muhlenberg District Court on Tuesday on charges of animal cruelty and threatening a Muhlenberg County Humane Society worker. Brenda Hogan, 57, is scheduled for a Nov. 9 pre-trial conference. She is charged with second-degree cruelty to animals and terroristic threatening.

She was cited to court by the Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Department based on a complaint by Amy Boatwright with the Humane Society.

Boatwright went to Hogan's home Sept. 7 because of complaints about Hogan's care of her animals, Humane Society director Kim Pennington said Wednesday.

Eleven dogs and 89 cats did not have adequate care, water, food or shelter were found, Hogan's court summons said.

Some of the animals were seized at the time, and Hogan, who was not home at the time, was later cited, Pennington said.

On Sept. 12, Hogan called the Humane Society and threatened to shoot Boatwright if she returned to Hogan's home, Pennington said.

Case Updates

Brenda Hogan says the Muhlenberg County Humane Society is accusing her of harming her animals. She says officials with the society say her dogs have mange and her cats have distemper. Hogan claims her dogs just have allergies and her cats have been treated for distemper by her vet.

It's been reported that Hogan has 86 cats and 13 dogs, but she says she only has 25-30 cats and 7 dogs.

Hogan says she doesn't want to give her animals up because she doesn't want them to be euthanized.

The Muhlenberg County Humane Society and Hogan's vet declined to comment because the case is still pending in court.

WBKO was unable to reach the sheriff's deputy who went to Hogan's house and cited her to court. She's charged with cruelty to animals and terroristic threatening.
