Two teens suspected of running down a deer with a car are expected to face charges in Fond du Lac County. A third man who placed an illegal tag on the deer also is expected to be charged, a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources official said.
Two Oakfield teens, ages 17 and 19, are accused of running down the deer in a field west of Oakfield on Oct. 31, said Fond du Lac County Conservation Warden Ed McCann.
"They were driving around shining deer - which is legal," McCann said Monday. "But then they got the idea to run one over."
The two, with another teen in the back seat, drove through a cornfield, saw a doe between 6 and 18 months old, and then ran it down with the car, he said. They called another friend to put a tag on the deer as if the deer had been taken legally.
The incident probably would have gone unchecked, but the driver got in an accident as he was leaving the cornfield and received a head injury, McCann said.
Hospital officials - who by law must report unreported accidents when someone comes in for treatment - called the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department when the man arrived in the emergency room. Officers, along with McCann, investigated and discovered what had happened to the deer.
The incident occurred several hours after the T-Zone hunt ended at sundown on Oct. 31. The special T-Zone gun-deer hunt is held annually to reduce the number of antlerless deer in specified areas. The man who put the tag on the deer intended to register it the next day as a legal kill, McCann said.
Charges are expected to be filed sometime this week. They could include hunting deer with the aid of an artificial light, a charge that carries a maximum fine of more than $2,000 and three-year revocation of DNR privileges. References « More cases in Fond du Lac County, WI
