Canada gosling poisoned
Syracuse, NY (US)

Incident Date: Monday, May 31, 1999
County: Onondaga

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A distressed Canada gosling found near Centre Pond near village of Manlius. An autopsy indicated the gosling had been poisoned, according to state pathologist Ward Stone in Albany. Cindy Page, a wildlife rehabilitator, and Ward Stone, a wildlife pathologist, believe the poisoning was intentional because the gosling was too young to fly and the village officials hadn't recently fertilized the pond area.

During a four-day period Page received word about three other goslings from the same pond that showed the same symptoms. One of them died, and two of them survived after treatment by Page and veterinarian Norman Goldstein of the Manlius Veterinary Hospital.

In mid-August, Chris LaFrance, 16, of Jordan saw a teenager kick a Canada gosling while LaFrance sat at a friend's house in Jordan. LeFrance rescued the goose and took it home. An x-ray showed the gosling's left thighbone was out of its socket, Goldstein said. The veterinarian unsuccessfully tried to replace the ball-head of the thighbone. Goldstein gave the gosling to Page to care for, but it later died.
