Someone broke into the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Shelter in Eastport Saturday night and took an 11-week-old Jack Russell terrier, police said.

The burglary occurred between 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday.

Suspects include a couple who employees said looked at the puppy around closing time that day, according to police reports.

The man told one of the kennel workers he "would do anything to get that dog for his wife," an SPCA employee told police.

Police said the burglar cut a hole in a window screen and entered through the unlocked window.

Sue Beatty, executive director of the county SPCA, said the puppy still requires medication. It had the shelter's phone number tattooed on its belly.

She said anyone looking to return the dog can call 410-268-4388.
