Metro police and Animal Control this week shut down a suspected east Nashville dog-fighting operation, making one arrest and seizing 12 pit bulls terriers.

Felmon Gerome Gardner, 32, of South 13th Street, was arrested Wednesday and charged with animal fighting and cruelty to animals. He was being held in lieu of $7,500 bond.

According to police affidavits, authorities got a call Oct. 23 that animals were being neglected at 610 S. 13th St. Animal Control went out, gave water to the animals, and left a note on the door for the owner to contact them.

Monday, Animal Control said it went back to the home and seized 12 dogs, all pit bulls terriers, found in the back yard. The dogs were in poor condition with old wounds from fighting, officials said.

The dogs' wounds are being treated, and they will remain in protective custody until the courts decide the case, Animal Control Director Judy Ladebauche said last night.

Case Updates

Felmon Gardner was charged with 12 counts of animal cruelty and one count of animal fighting. Police seized a dozen dogs from the backyard of this home last October. Inside they found journals detailing dog fights, training equipment and medicine. In court Gardner agreed to two years probation to avoid a trial. During that time he may not own any dogs. The dogs he did own, which were confiscated by police, are deemed vicious and will now be put to sleep.
