Officials in Virginia Beach are considering felony animal cruelty charges after a severely injured cat was found Tuesday afternoon in a dumpster.
According to authorities, a Virginia Beach Animal Control Officer was called to the 600 block of Firefall Drive on a report of a cat in a trash dumpster. A passerby had heard the cat crying inside the dumpster and began looking for it prior to the officer's arrival.
When the officer arrived, officials say she found a young, black domestic short hair female cat inside a tied, plastic trash bag. The cat appeared to be paralyzed and bleeding from its left ear.
When the cat was examined, the authorities say the officer found a wound on the back of the cat's neck that appeared to an entrance wound from a small caliber firearm, possibly a pellet gun. Additionally, a local veterinarian said that the cat was suffering from neurological damage.
The cat was eventually euthanized.
Police have not suspects at this time, but are considering the case as a felony animal cruelty act.
