Russell pleaded no contest to extreme cruelty to animals, a 4th degree felony. At the plea hearing, she was ordered to:
1. Enter and complete Anicare treatment program 2. Perform 100 hours of community service in an area to be determined by the Court at the time of plea (she had to do community service in an animal related field) 3. Pay restitution to Greyhound Companions of New Mexico for vet. Costs incurred in the amount of $1,115.38. 4. Reimburse Veterinary Pet Insurance $161.00 5. Pay Dr. Steve Hopkins/Academy Animal Clinic for surgery performed in the amount of $1.166.45 6. Send certified copies of veterinary records of her current pets to the Court to verify their current health and then every 3 months until time of sentencing.
If the above conditions were not met within 18 months, she was to be placed onsupervised probation for 18 months.
A Sentencing hearing was then scheduled for 18 months later at which time, she failed to show. Another date was scheduled for October 9, 2003 and the hearing was conducted over the phone as the defendant had moved to Georgia. Because she had not met most of the above terms as defined by the Court, she was sentenced to:
1. Supervised probation in state of Georgia 2. Must produce certified vet records for her other pets 3. Must pay restitutions as previously outlined within 30 days 4. Must produce documentation within 30 days that she had completed Anicare program.
