The SPCA removed the animals after a tenant, Jason Dee Quisenberry, 29, of The Colony had been asked to vacate the home at 5301 Strickland Ave. and apparently left the animals without food or water.

The animals include eight cats that were cramped into a filthy master bedroom, five pigeons, three quail, two parakeets, one lizard, one pig and one mixed-breed dog. Three of the animals - the lizard and two parakeets - were found dead.

"In one room, cats and kittens were cramped together and they only had a litter box the size of a shoe box," said SPCA spokeswoman Anita Kelso Edson.

The animals will be medically evaluated, spayed and neutered, and made available for adoption by the SPCA of Texas.

After Quisenberry abandoned the premises, the SPCA's humane services officer Tory Ball removed the animals on Sept. 3.

"It looked like a quick pick-up and move," Ball said.

She added that there had been no previous complaints at The Colony residence.

Quisenberry faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. Unreasonable abandonment, in which a person fails to make any provisions to take care of an animal, is considered a form of animal cruelty under state penal code, SPCA officials said.

The Colony resident failed to appear for a civil custody hearing for the animals on Friday, at which Municipal Judge Paul Stuckle awarded custody to the SPCA.

Quisenberry remains at large with an outstanding warrant for his arrest, according to police.

Det. Logan Stout with The Colony Police Department said Quisenberry has been uncooperative with police and has failed to surrender himself.

Scott and Tammy Watson of ReMax Legacy Point, who were managing the three-bedroom/two-bath house for the homeowner, had asked Quisenberry to vacate because he failed to pay a total of $3,050 in deposits and rental payments.

Neighbors living in the subdivision near Lions Club Park say they rarely saw Quisenberry. One resident who was asked to be a witness for the real-estate agents as they entered the property said the home "smelled like animals."

The residence apparently had been hastily abandoned, she said.

"There were still dishes and a microwave in the kitchen," said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified. "There were toys in one room and even a Monopoly game that was being played. It was all just abandoned."

A six-pet limit applies to residents of The Colony, according to a city ordinance. In addition, livestock such as pigs are prohibited, as are wildlife, which include quail.
