CONVICTED: Was justice served?

Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Defendant/Suspect: Keith E. Johnson

A Providence District Court judge sentenced Keith Johnson to one year of probation and ordered him to perform 100 hours of community service at the Glocester animal shelter. Johnson, 36, was also ordered to reimburse the town for about $500 in veterinary costs.

Animal control officers said Johnson left his springer spaniel locked up in a cage in a garage for three months with no food or water. The dog apparently survived by eating its own waste.

A second dog seized from Johnson's home was returned when officers found no evidence of neglect. Animal control officer Gary Hopkins said Johnson told officials that he was punishing Maggie for urinating in the house.

Maggie weighed half of her ideal weight when she was rescued. Hopkins said she has put on 9 pounds in a week. She still needs to gain another 10 to 20 pounds.

Johnson signed over ownership of Maggie to the town, and she will be put up for adoption.
