Horse neglect - Two dozen seized Elbert County, CO (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Oct 7, 2004 County: Elbert
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Pamela Bradford
Two dozen horses along with more than 30 dogs and other farm animals were rescued from an Elbert County property. 4 p.m. Oct. 7, 2004. The horses were underfed and living in unhealthy conditions, according to sheriff's department officials. The horses were allegedly filthy, thin and some had overgrown hoofs. Some horses were reportedly so thin that their hips and ribs showed against their skin.
"Some of them are walking clear back on their heels," said Bruce Slaugh, an animal care volunteer.
An official in the sheriff's office called it one of the worst cases of animal neglect ever in the area.
In addition to the horses, authorities seized several dogs, a cow and a pig. There are also two emus and two llamas on the property that will be removed.
"The animals are in deplorable conditions, the housing is also deplorable," said Elbert County Sheriff Bill Frangis.
The horses will be transported to the Elbert County Fairgrounds in Kiowa Thursday. Where they'll go from there has not been determined.
A friend of the woman responsible for the animals told 9NEWS reporter Andrew Resnik that people often bring sick, neglected or abused animals to the woman's home and she never turns them away.
"She was afraid to go to anybody for help, because she knows a lot of the animals would probably be euthanized," said Shirley Roth, a friend and neighbor.
The woman faces misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty if she has no previous charges involving animals.
