Police are looking for Matthew Pearce, a Zionsville man suspected of stabbing four horses in a neighbor's corral, killing one of the animals.

Pearce, 27, is wanted on four felony counts of cruelty to an animal and one charge of obstruction of justice for the stabbings late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Detective Lt. Rick Dowden of the Boone County Sheriff's Department said a homeowner told police she awoke to feed her horses and found one dead in its corral and three others seriously injured.

"All of the horses had stab wounds, slash wounds and cuts that were bleeding profusely," Dowden said.

From a fence line, Dowden said police saw rope in a neighbor's yard matching bloody rope found near the dead horse. That led them to speak with Teresa Ann Woods, 41, and Pearce, her live-in boyfriend.

Dowden said the couple initially gave police only minimal information, but were later seen picking up rope and other items from their yard that an officer had suggested was evidence.

He said Pearce admitted going into the yard, picking up rope and throwing it in a trash container. Dowden said Pearce volunteered to take a polygraph test to prove his innocence, but was gone by the time officers arrived with polygraph equipment.

Dowden said police later searched the garage of Woods' property and found a knife covered with blood, what appeared to be horsehair and the handle of a knife that matched another blade found in the horse pasture.

Police arrested Woods on Thursday morning, on one count of cruelty to animals for each horse, and another charge of obstruction of justice for tampering with evidence.
