County: Richmond City

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Angela Battle

On February 12, 2004, Animal Control Officer K. Merrick and Humane Investigator D. Miskovic responded to a complaint at 6021 LaVeta Drive for a home owner who wanted 3 dogs removed because they were abandoned when the tenants were evicted 2 weeks prior.

Merrick and Miskovic found 2 dogs in poor condition and 1 dog severely emaciated with sores all over its body. The temperature that evening was below freezing. All three dogs had no food, water and their shelters were barely standing from wear and tear. The heavy "anchor" style chains were too short and were weighing the dogs to almost complete immobility. The three dogs were seized and were given veterinary attention.

After an extensive investigation, Angela Battle was charged with 3 counts of animal cruelty under state code 3.1-796.122 on July 21st, 2004. Battle appeared in Richmond's Manchester Criminal Court for trial on September 7th, 2004. Battle's argument was the dog's were "fine". The Honorable Judge Rupe found Battle guilty on all three charges. $1,500 fine was imposed, 270 days in jail with 240 days suspended for three years and Battle may not own any companion animals for three years.

All three dogs were named and placed in good homes.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
