On September 23, 2004, Officer K. Merrick with Richmond Animal Control responded to the 1200 block of Denny Street on the north side of Richmond City, for a dog abandoned in a vehicle. Assisted by Richmond Police and Richmond Fire, an approximate 2 year old 70 lb pit bull was removed from the vehicle. Only one window was left open about 1".

Residents from the area stated the vehicle had been there for about 24 hours with the dog inside. An outside temperature of 86 degrees was taken from a digital thermometer. An internal vehicle temperature of 127.1 degrees was taken as well, and finally an internal rectal temperature of 106.8 was taken of the dog. The dog appeared to be severely dehydrated and lethargic. The dog received immediate veterinary care for dehydration with intravenous and subcutaneous fluids to stabilize the dogs condition. The license plates came back to the accused residing in Chesapeake, and another address in Virginia Beach.

Any available assistance from local authorities in those jurisdictions, please contact Officer K. Merrick at merrickkf@ci.richmond.va.us.
